The first Estonian Encyclopaedia was published
in 1932–1937.
Estonian Encyclopaedia Publishers Ltd was established in January 18, 1991.
The company is the successor of the Encyclopaedia Editorial Board of Valgus
Publishers, that was founded in 1963 for editing and publishing the Estonian
Soviet Encyclopaedia (8 volumes, published in 1968–1976).
Estonian Encyclopaedia Publishers is the largest publisher of reference
books in Estonia. We have the largest databases on Estonia and experienced
editorial staff. We are the owners of several trade marks. Our publishing
house co-operates with publishers all over the world, buying and selling
rights and participating in co-editions.
Our most important publication is the 15-volume Estonian National Encyclopaedia.
The first volume of the second, completely revised edition of the Estonian
Encyclopaedia was published in 1985, the last, 15th volume will be published
in 2006. Each illustrated volume of this universal reference work contains
ab. 6000 entries. The supplementary volume (vol. 13) includes also index
of terms and personal names. Volumes 11, 12 and 14 contain material about
Estonia.
In 2005 “The Great World Atlas” was published.
We also publish reference books, dictionaries and general non-fiction
for all age groups, both translations and works by Estonian authors. They
include a series of biographical dictionaries (Estonian art, theatre,
science, education, sports etc.), “Chronicle of the 20th Century.
Estonia and the World” (4 volumes), “100 Great Estonians of
the 20th Century” (available in Estonian and in English), best-selling
factfinder “Alpha & Omega” (6th edition in 2005), one-volume
encyclopaedia and many others.
