Villu Toots (1916 – 1993) was an outstanding master of the art
of calligraphy and book design. In his book he wanted to exemplify through
writing the history of Estonian culture and its different stages. The
book contains examples of writings from the 13th century up to 1940.
Script is presented as an illuminator and the background to cultural
history, with contents of the text sometimes more important than its
form.
Parallel texts in Estonian and in English.
